Discord Server Boost FAQ: Every Common Question Answered

This is a FAQ about server boosts as a Discord feature — how they behave, what they can and can't do — not about buying them. (Questions about ordering from DCBoosts are on the store FAQ.) Answers describe Discord at the time of writing; where Discord changes a detail, the Server Boost screen inside the app is the current source.

The basics

What is a server boost?

A unit of support a member applies to a server. Boosts are counted, and the server's boost level is determined by the count. Each boost is backed by a subscription — either the two included with full Nitro or a separate boost subscription — and lasts as long as that subscription does.

What does one boost do?

On its own, usually nothing visible. Perks are unlocked by level, and levels start at 2 boosts. One boost on an unboosted server is progress toward Level 1, not a perk. The explainer covers the mechanics in more depth.

What are the levels?

Level 1 at 2 boosts, Level 2 at 7, Level 3 at 14, at the time of writing. Each level includes everything from the levels below it. There is no Level 4; boosts beyond 14 are headroom. The levels guide lists what each level unlocks.

Do boost perks apply to everyone in the server?

Yes. Perks belong to the server. Every member gets the higher upload limit, better audio and extra emoji, whether or not they personally boosted. The only thing boosters get individually is a booster badge and, if the server has set one up, a booster role.

Who can boost, and how

Can I boost my own server?

Yes. Owners and admins boost their own servers all the time. There's no rule that boosts have to come from other members.

Do I need to be an admin to boost a server?

No. Any member with boosts available can boost any server they're in. No permission or role is required.

Can someone boost a server they're not a member of?

No. You have to be in the server to boost it. If a booster leaves, their boosts leave with them.

Can multiple people boost the same server?

Yes, and that's the normal case. The server's count is the total across all boosters.

Can one person apply several boosts to one server?

Yes. Full Nitro includes two boosts that can both go on the same server, and additional boost subscriptions can be stacked on top. Discord caps the total a server can hold (100 at the time of writing).

Is there a limit to how many boosts a server can have?

Yes — 100 at the time of writing. In practice nothing changes after 14, so the cap only matters for very large communities that boost as a show of support.

Timing and changes

How long does a boost last?

As long as the subscription behind it. There's no fixed boost lifetime. A boost from a monthly subscription that keeps renewing lasts indefinitely; a cancelled one ends with the paid period. The duration guide goes through every case.

What happens if boosts drop below a threshold?

The server loses that level immediately and the perks switch off — the vanity URL stops working, the banner is hidden, limits shrink. Nothing is deleted; it all comes back if the count recovers.

Can I move my boosts to a different server?

Yes. Boosts can be transferred between servers from your subscription settings. Discord applies a cooldown after each move before the boost can be moved again; the exact period is shown in the app.

Do boosts stack with Nitro?

They're different things. Nitro upgrades your account; boosts upgrade a server. Full Nitro includes two boosts, which is the only overlap. Boosting a server doesn't give you Nitro features, and Nitro Basic doesn't include boosts at the time of writing. See server boost vs Nitro.

Do boosts carry over if the server is deleted?

The boosts return to the member who owns them and can be applied elsewhere. The server's level obviously doesn't survive the server.

Perks and limits

Which perks need which level?

At the time of writing: animated icon and custom invite background from Level 1; static banner from Level 2; vanity URL and animated banner from Level 3. Audio quality, stream quality, upload limits and emoji/sticker/soundboard slots increase at each level. Discord adjusts the exact numbers periodically.

Does boosting increase the member limit?

No. Boosts don't change how many members a server can have.

Does boosting help a server get discovered?

Not directly. Server Discovery has its own eligibility requirements, set by Discord, and boost level isn't one of them. Boosts improve the experience for existing members; they don't put the server in front of new ones. The growth guide covers what does.

Can boost perks be turned off?

The level itself can't be hidden, but the boost progress bar above the channel list can be disabled in server settings, and configurable perks (banner, vanity URL, animated icon) are only active if someone sets them up.

Are boosts from a package different from member boosts?

Not from the server's point of view. A boost is a boost; the count and the level don't distinguish where each one came from. The differences are practical: who is paying, for how long, and whether a dropped boost gets replaced. The duration guide covers how package plan lengths work.

Is boosting worth it?

It depends entirely on which perk you want. If nobody in the server would notice a banner or use more emoji, the honest answer is no. If the server streams, shares media, or wants a memorable invite link, the level that includes that perk is worth aiming for — and the how many boosts guide helps size it.
