Discord Server Boost vs Nitro: What's the Difference?

The two are easy to confuse because they're sold side by side and one includes the other. The short version: Nitro is a subscription for your account, and a server boost is something applied to a server that everyone in it benefits from. Nitro happens to include a couple of boosts, which is where the overlap comes from.

What a Server Boost Actually Does

A boost is a unit of support applied to a server. Individually it does nothing visible; boosts are counted, and the server's level is set by the count. At the time of writing, 2 boosts reach Level 1, 7 reach Level 2 and 14 reach Level 3. Each level unlocks a bundle of perks for the whole server: more emoji and sticker slots, higher audio bitrate ceilings, better stream quality, larger uploads for everyone, an animated icon and invite background at Level 1, a banner at Level 2, and a vanity invite URL and animated banner at Level 3.

What Nitro Actually Does

Nitro is a personal subscription. It changes your experience everywhere on Discord: larger file uploads, higher-quality screen sharing, the ability to use custom emoji and stickers from any server in any other server, animated avatars and profile decorations, longer messages and a profile badge. None of that affects a server's level or gives other members anything.

Where They Overlap

The overlap is entirely those two included boosts. A server whose members all have full Nitro can reach a high level purely from included boosts; a server full of Nitro Basic subscribers gets no boosts from them at all.

The reverse doesn't apply: applying boosts to a server gives you no Nitro features. A member of a Level 3 server without Nitro still has the standard upload limit outside that server and can't use its emoji elsewhere.

Which One Should You Get?

You run or care about a specific server and want the banner, vanity URL, emoji slots or better voice quality → you need boosts, and enough of them to reach the level that includes the perk. How you get them (members' Nitro boosts, boost subscriptions, or a package) is a separate question; how many boosts your server needs walks through the count.

You want better uploads, streaming and profile features for yourself, across every server you're in → Nitro. If you also want to support one server, full Nitro's two boosts are a reasonable way to do both.

You want a server to reach a level quickly without depending on members → boosts bought directly, either as boost subscriptions from Discord or as a package. Common Misunderstandings

• "If I get Nitro, my server levels up." Only by the two boosts full Nitro includes, and only if you apply them to that server. One person's Nitro reaches Level 1 at most.
• "Boosting gives me Nitro perks." No. Boosts are for the server; Nitro is for you.
• "Boosts are permanent." They last as long as whoever applied them keeps paying (or as long as a package's plan runs). Levels can go down.
• "Nitro Basic includes boosts." At the time of writing it doesn't; that's the main difference between the two Nitro tiers.

Can I boost a server without Nitro?

Yes. Discord sells boosts as their own subscription, and boosts can also be bought in packages from third parties. Nitro is one way to get boosts, not the only one.

Does Nitro Basic include server boosts?

If I boost a server and then leave it, what happens?

Your boosts stop counting for that server, and you can apply them to another one. The server's level drops if it falls below a threshold.

Do boosts from a package work the same as Nitro boosts?

From the server's side, a boost is a boost — the count and the level don't distinguish where each one came from. The difference is who is paying for them and for how long.
